A Heart of Darkness not so Conradian?

Set in a row of girlie bars, the Heart is Phnom Penh’s most famous nightspot. Originally a gay bar and briefly closed down in 2005 for refurbishment – after a customer was shot – the Heart has gone through many character changes. Its relatively cheap booze and consistent music make this probably the city’s most cosmopolitan venue with expats, Khmers, tourists, backpackers and working girls alike mingling in equal numbers. Brett Angel’s midnight set on a Saturday, is the most packed in town. If you prefer dancing without treading on too many toes, it’s best to aim for one of the midweek nights.
